Dr. Kandil received his undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Management Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He attended medical school at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, and graduated in 2011 with multiple honors. Dr. Kandil completed both his internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine, where he received the Chief Resident of the Year award in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Following his residency graduation, Dr. Kandil further sub-specialized and completed his fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Stanford University Hospital.
Dr. Rahman Kandil is a fellowship-trained sports medicine Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in Shoulder and Knee surgery. Dr. Kandil treats a variety of bone and joint conditions including general orthopedic injuries, fractures, and ligament/muscle/tendon injuries. He is currently the Chair of Orthopedic Surgery at Stone Springs Hospital Center (SSHC) and is an elected member of SSHC Medical Executive as well as Surgical Advisory Committees working on Process Improvement Projects. He also served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
He performs arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, hip, and knee as well as minimally invasive joint replacements of the knee and shoulder. In addition, he has a strong interest in complex arthroscopic repair and reconstruction of the shoulder and knee, cartilage regenerative procedures of the shoulder and knee, and the orthopedic management of pediatric athletic injuries.
Dr. Kandil’s patient-oriented approach helps establish the trust and confidence necessary to achieve the best possible outcome and return patients to their highest possible level of performance.
Dr. Kandil has been a presenter and guest-lecturer for several organizations and has numerous published works. He has received multiple awards and research grants throughout his career. Dr. Kandil is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
As a former college varsity basketball player himself, sports medicine and comprehensive medical care of athletes are particular areas of interest and importance to Dr. Kandil.
While at the University of Virginia, Dr. Kandil cared for UVA and JMU collegiate athletes and also served as a team physician for the Blue Ridge Academy and William Monroe High School football teams.
At Stanford University, he served as an assistant team physician for the Stanford University Varsity Football team and throughout his training has cared for NBA, NHL, MLB, and NFL professional and collegiate athletes.
In the right clinical setting, Dr. Kandil strongly believes in harnessing the body’s natural ability to heal itself and utilizes biologics as an option for patients with persistent pain. The area of orthobiologics is an exciting frontier in medicine and Dr. Kandil is actively involved in performing research, writing book chapters, and using biological treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and autologous stem cell therapy (bone marrow aspirate concentrate) in select conditions that have strong scientific and clinical evidence to support their use.
While not in the office, Dr. Kandil enjoys spending time with his wife and young son. He is an avid sports fan, a technology enthusiast, an award-winning chef “Montessori of Chantilly Chili cook-off 2018 :-)”, and enjoys camping, hiking, and traveling. A native of northern Virginia, Dr. Kandil is excited to serve his local community and bring world-class training and expertise back to Northern Virginia.
